Swimming Lessons

For children and adults

Since 1973 children and adults have learned to swim at Newpark Sports Centre. We offer top standards of teaching. All swimming teachers at the Centre are fully qualified and are dedicated to passing on swimming skills to their classes that will encourage a lifetime love of the water. There are limited numbers in each classes.

Children must be 4 years of age to start lessons.

To book your space, you must know your child’s swimming level. See below for details on our levels, or give us a call to arrange a complimentary swimming assessment during any of our public swim times.

Class Levels!

See below for more details

  • Water Confidence is an essential class for all new swimmers! Here, we learn how to enter and exit the pool safely, develop the correct body positions for swimming on front and back, alongside transitioning between body positions, and general proprioception in the water. We also introduce leg propulsion skills (kicking), and aquatic mobility. Submersion skills are introduced and developed (face under the water and breath control), and general water safety, all learned in a fun and dynamic environment.

We highly recommend all new swimmers begin at this level. The foundations learned here will carry into every further level, ensuring your child is off to a fantastic start in their swimming journey. Armbands are worn at this level.

*If children cannot comfortably put and keep their face and ears in the water, they must start at this level.

  • Here we begin to develop body positions on front and back, and balance, with and without various flotation devices. We also begin to hone lower body propulsion skills, helping our swimmers develop strong kicking skills, and introduce upper body propulsion (arms) in frontcrawl and backcrawl. We also continue to develop full submersion swimming and breath control. Breaststroke and butterfly legs are introduced here, and we continue to develop water confidence, general water safety, and spatial awareness in the water.

*Children must be able to comfortably put and keep their face and ears in the water to enter this level.

  • Now we start to introduce front-crawl breathing as part of catch-up frontcrawl both with and without a board. Full-stroke backcrawl is further developed, alongside a more detailed introduction of butterfly and breaststroke leg kick. Diving is introduced and deep water swimming skills are also developed. We also introduce tumble-turns and continue to develop underwater and submersion swimming skills.

  • Here we continue to build on fullstroke frontcrawl and backcrawl, with and without a board. We start to focus more intently on breaststroke leg kick, and also begin to introduce breaststroke arms and the timing of the stroke. Stamina begins to increase, alongside improving diving and deep water confidence skills.

  • In our last widths class, we work on honing full-stroke front crawl, backcrawl, and breaststroke. We continue to develop butterfly kick, and also introduce butterfly arms. Diving, underwater swimming, and tumble-turns emphasised, and half- length swimming introduced. We also emphasis stamina and stroke control over distance (half length to full length) in preparation for our lengths class.

  • Now we are starting to introduce lane swimming. We start slowly, introducing how to lane swim safely when other people are also using the lane, and also introduce the time clock. We continue to hone and improve full-stroke frontcrawl, backcrawl, and breaststroke. Our focus is to improving strength and endurance while maintaining stroke technique over distance. Diving and correct turning skills are also improved.

  • Our junior coached lane swimming for pre-teens and teens focuses on stroke finesse and fitness in the water. Stamina and speed are developed here, allowing swimmers to build their swimming abilities and stay healthy in a fun, social environment.
